ECU academic wins prestigious technology award

Congratulations to Head of ECU’s School of Computer and Security Science, Professor Craig Valli, who won the 2010 Achiever of the Year Award at the Western Australian Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards (WAITTA) last week.
Established in 1991, the Awards aim to recognise outstanding performance and contributions by members of the information technology and telecommunications community to Western Australia.
Professor Valli was recognised for his contributions to the industry over many years. One such contribution has been the design of the digital forensics tool SimPLE, which is now used by WA Police as a way to view and export relevant computer files.
This win is a wonderful achievement for Craig, who was also nominated as a finalist in the WA Innovator of the Year Awards last year for the same technology.
“It was an absolute honour to be recognised by the IT industry in WA for the work we do here at ECU in cyber security,” said Professor Valli.
“This award demonstrates that ECU graduates, of which I am also one, are capable of producing significant outcomes for the community, and I am thrilled to be able to represent ECU in such a positive way.”
This is the third time an ECU academic has won the award, with Executive Dean from the Faculty of Computing, Health and Science, Professor Tony Watson winning in 1993, and Chief Information Officer, Mr Garry Trinder winning in 2006.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Advancement), Professor John Finlay-Jones, congratulated Professor Valli on his achievements.
“This is wonderful recognition for the positive work that Craig has done in the field cyber security and on behalf of everyone within the ECU community I would like to congratulate him on this outstanding achievement.”
ECU academics Mr Peter Hannay and Patryk Szewcyzk were also finalists for awards in the security category and ECU Honours student Nicolas Garel was a finalist in the student category .
